India has approved a new medical use for Wegovy (semaglutide injection 2.4 mg), expanding its role beyond weight management. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has approved Wegovy for the treatment of noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis.
According to Novo Nordisk India, the approval makes Wegovy the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist approved both globally and in India for this MASH indication.
What Is MASH?
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a progressive form of fatty liver disease. It occurs when excess fat accumulates in the liver and is accompanied by inflammation and liver injury.
Over time, MASH can contribute to liver fibrosis and, in more advanced cases, serious liver complications. Obesity and metabolic conditions can increase the risk of developing the disease.
How Is Wegovy Being Used for MASH?
